Malathi Iyengar shares her critically acclaimed choreographic work ‘Sacred Geometry’ and a specially designed dance theatre work for children and families titled ‘Punyakoti’ (premiere) along with Rangoli Dance Company members and Guest Artists from India.

Sacred Geometry’ (premiere 2002) uses geometric figures and shapes to depict the beauty of creation and shows how an absolute unity can become multiplicity and diversity. The work explores form, movement, space, and time as evoked by the sacred diagrams, the ‘Mandalas’ and the nine planets, the ‘Navagraha’.

Punyakoti inspired by a folk tale called "Govina Haadu'' (The song of the cow), from Karnataka, India, is about a pious and truthful cow named Punyakoti.

Malathi Iyengar’s seemless concept, choreography, and direction includes exhilarating south and north Indian music composed by the most sought after composer Rajkumar Bharathi (Chennai, India). Both Malathi Iyengar and Rajkumar Bharathi have collaborated for over fourteen years on various projects. Masks and Costumes are designed by Lakshmi Iyengar and the performance includes English narrations.

Rangoli Dance Company presents the world premiere of Planting A Sequoia, a new work choreographed by Malathi Iyengar based on the poem by acclaimed American poet Dana Gioia.  Part of the Ford Amphitheatre 2004 Season, a multi-disciplinary arts series produced by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission in cooperation with Los Angeles County-based arts organizations, Poet Dana Gioia will be on hand to read his poem aloud at the performance.   Also on the program is a short prelude of Indian music and dance.

Rangoli Dance Company blends Western and Indian classical music with the powerful vocabulary of Indian dance, modern dance, and spoken word to interpret Gioia’s quintessentially American poem about the ritual planting of trees.  The result is an unprecedented tapestry of emotion, rhythm, and style.  Collaborators on the piece include American composer Alva Henderson and Indian composer Rajkumar Bharathi; lighting designer Eileen Cooley; costume designer Lakshmi Iyengar; and set designer Suresh Iyengar.  Traditional dancers from India, including Ranjith Babu; Praveen Kumar; K. Murali Mohan; Sudarsan Sibi; Sanjay Shantaram; and Shama Shantaram, join dancers based in Southern California, including Ron Burton; Lakshmi Iyengar; Hema Iyer; Shyamala Moorty; Shaheen Sheik; and Soumya Sundaresh.  This is the first time the Ford has presented an Indian dance ensemble in a full evening of work at the amphitheater.

Dance of the Gods and Goddesses
featuring Rangoli Dance Company and Rangoli Junior Dancers
Choreographer & Artistic Director - Malathi Iyenger

The performance features dances in the 'Bharata Natyam' (Classical dance of India) style to enact stories related to the gods and goddesses of India. The numerous deities in the Hindu Pantheon are considered manifestations of the Supreme Spirit which can take any form any time. India is a storehouse of myths and legends and these dances reveal stories that depict HIM as the infant and then the lover Krishna, the handsome king Rama, the learned Goddess Saraswati, the loyal but independent Parvati, the fiercesome Shiva or the benevolent Lakshmi.

Alia Rice and Shaheen Sheik, disciples of Malathi Iyengar & members of Rangoli Dance Company perform 'Dance of the Gods and Goddesses', a 'bharata Natyam' dance performance celebrating 'Diwali', Festival of Lights.

Choreography is by Malathi Iyengar, www.rangoli.org

'Diwali' or 'Deepavali' (Row of Lights), a composite festival runs for three consecutive days and is celebrated throughout India. The festivities include an early morning bath, drawing of sacred diagrams on floor, new clothes, elaborate food followed by firecrackers and illumination in the evening. Often the houses are white-washed to mark an auspicious beginning and sweets are distributed among family, friends and merchants.

'Good over Evil' is the main message of Diwali. The first day of Diwali is called 'Naraka Chaturdashi' and marks the destruction of demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna. The second day is in in honor of goddess 'Lakshmi' who is the bestower of health, wealth, and prosperity. The third day is 'Bali Padyami', and on this day, King Bali would come out of the netherworld and rule the earth as per the boon given by Lord Vishnu during his incarnation as 'Vamana'.

Diwali also commemorates the homecoming of Prince Rama to Ayodhya and the worship of goddess Durga.

Press Quote on 'Sacred Geometry' - (Premiered September 22, 2002, Los Angeles)
"... in Sacred Geometry what was clear, was some arresting dancing by the dancers. The most impressive was a section called 'Navagraha', in which a serene Hershall represented the sun attracting nine orbiting planets in a series of distinctive solos. As above, so below: the epilogue revealed the same human harmony in a village laborer's circle dance."
